'Soft Pastel' Paintings by Sheryl A. VanVleck

Click here for my techniques with pastels and "how-to" information.

I tried a lot of pastel products prior to finding the one that I work with now. I was fortunate to have companies send me samples of their products, at a time when I was getting a lot of national art coverage. I recommend that anyone buy half stick sets and try the many and varied pastels before spending money on a large set. I own a large set of Rembrandt's and have a shoe box of back-ups of my favorite colors. I love their buttery consistency. Although, their web site says they are "harder in consistency than many soft pastels." I do know that they do give me wonderful definition and control in painting. They are made by Royal Talens, a company that dates back to 1899.

Some of my available paintings in pastel are shown below.

Information about each work is shown when you pass the cursor over the photo.

The Dulcimer Player - Soft Pastel - 16x20 - $ Elder Sando - Soft Pastel - 20x16 - $

What's Next - Soft Pastel - 32x20 - $ The Guardians - soft pastel - 31x21 - $ Working on Overtime - soft pastel - 46 x 30 - $

Pastel paintings are shipped in wooden crates, with cushioning between the crate and the painting. This does add to the cost of the painting but is worth the investment. While I have had pottery destroyed in shipping, I have never had a painting damaged, and I have shipped my work to contests and customers in the United States and foreign countries.
