My grandmother lived by the train tracks and it was common for a man to knock on her door and ask if she had a half a sandwich she would share. Even with six children and three adults in their house, my grandmother (Ethel Leah Stetson DeWitt) always had an extra chicken leg or sandwich to give a hungry man. Occasionally, she would pull the last $2.00 out of her pocket and give it to the man.

This was usually in response to a story about a sick wife or child.

I have a feeling that there were quite a few kittens drawn on boards and rails near my grandmother's home.

"Kind lady lives here"

What do you think this symbol would mean?

Did you guess what it meant?

I am guessing here, but I imagine the kitten meant the woman feeds stray kittens so she will feed a stray man.

The next sign is: What does this one mean?
