Men who were out-of-work during the depression, grabbed rides on passing trains to travel a thousand miles across the country, in the hopes of finding work. They did not have money for shelter or food and the local Sheriff would often run them out of town. But, if they found a farmer who was willing to let them sleep in his hayloft for the night, they shared that information by marking this symbol to direct future travelers to a dry, warm and safe spot to sleep.

"You can sleep in the loft here"

You can sleep in the hayloft here

Did you guess what it meant?
